On August 11, 1912, Nell Schmidt, also known as the Alameda Mermaid, became the first woman and just third person to swim across the San Francisco Bay. Every March, in honor of National Women’s History Month, swim like Nell by swimming a 500 or a 1000 without turning at the wall!
